This course will give you an insight into thyroid physiology, treatment regulation and management, and potential adverse outcomes and risks associated with thyroid disease and its treatment. Pakistan Endocrine Society as part of its academic initiatives has initiated this one-month online blended thyroid course. 

Target audience

This course is particularly targeted at Clinicians, physicians and residents working in the field of thyroid disorders. This educational offering will meet the needs of busy clinicians.

Course Outline

Over the duration of this one-month online short course, you will work through the following modules

  • Module 1- Interpretation of Thyroid function tests and thyroid nodule
  • Module 2- Hypothyroidism
  • Module 3- Hyperthyroidism
  • Module 4- Thyroid & Pregnancy

Course outcomes

After taking this course, you will be able to

  • Identify the most appropriate methods to obtain a precise diagnosis and complete workup of people with thyroid disorders
  • Develop a potential treatment strategy based on the individual’s workup.
  • Describe the management of thyroid disorders during pregnancy.

Learning objectives

After taking this course, you will be given the tools to

  1. Interpret thyroid function measurements
  2. Evaluate a patient presenting with a thyroid nodule
  3. Assess and manage patients presenting with hypothyroidism
  4. Understand how to initiate and adjust thyroxine dose
  5. Assess and manage patients presenting with hyperthyroidism
  6. Understand various treatment options for managing hyperthyroidism
  7. Identify the significant changes that occur in thyroid physiology during pregnancy
  8. Correctly define what is a normal and abnormal thyroid function during pregnancy
  9. Understand how to regulate treatment in women with pre-existing hypothyroidism
  10. Understand how to manage antithyroid drug treatment Before and during pregnancy
  11. Describe the adverse outcomes associated with thyroid disease during pregnancy

This course is of one-month duration, with weekly zoom synchronous sessions of one hour (Every Saturday from 3-4 pm PST) which will be conducted by experienced endocrinologists and executive members of the Pakistan Endocrine Society. A multimedia-rich online component of the Learning Management System is an integral part of the course comprising animated videos, important links, resources, and collaborative discussion forums. The assessment included 4 Quizzes one at the end of each module.

Average weekly minimum 2-3 hours’ time commitment required from the course participants.

Certificate in Minimally Invasive Surgery 

The CIMS course aims to provide surgeons (residents or practicing) with the knowledge and skills for incorporating laparoscopic surgical techniques to meet the learning requirements of local, national, and international healthcare professionals within the surgical specialties. This will be accomplished in a self-paced, comfortable environment with supportive faculty who will lay out the foundation steps necessary to become a skilled and effective laparoscopic surgeon. The knowledge and skills learned via this course will be useful in surgical practice, teaching, and training.
 

Course Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate basic concepts and principles of laparoscopic surgery
  • Identify and treat operative and post-operative complications arising during and from minimally invasive surgery
  • Demonstrate manipulation of laparoscopic instruments in laparoscopic manoeuvres with adequate dexterity.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of minimally invasive surgery ergonomics
  • Demonstrate skills of minimally invasive surgery by use of high and low reliability laparoscopic training devices.

The course comprises of eight modules:

  • Module 1 General Principles of MIS
  • Module 2 MIS instruments Module 3 Basic techniques in MIS 
  • Module 4 Anesthesia and analgesia in MIS
  • Module 5 Commonly performed laparoscopic procedures
  • Module 6 Issues in laparoscopic surgery
  • Module 7 Recent advances, latest research, and the way forward for MIS 
  • Module 8 The practical laparoscopic surgeon

This course is of 12 credit hours, with 9 synchronous sessions of 2 hours (Friday 3-5 pm PST) and asynchronous learning on course website . There will also be 2 Days Hands on training sessions On site. Average weekly minimum 6-8 hours time commitment required from the course participants.
